Now that it’s getting warmer outside I’m attempting to get my skin ready for all of the tank tops and maxi dresses I can handle. I have super sensitive skin – so I have to stay away from certain chemicals. Last year, I tried making my own sugar scrub and to be honest – it worked better than the $50 jar I bought from the department store.
Making your own is super simple and very affordable. All you need is sugar, olive oil (or coconut oil), and fragrance oil – if you want to add a pretty scent! Personally, I use fragrance oils from candlescience.com – I find that their scents are the most consistent and offer a lot of options for great prices.
So, to make your own scrub combine 2 cups of granulated sugar with 1/4 cup of olive oil. If you want to add a scent, add it directly to the oil. I used four drops of Gardenia fragrance. Add the oil slowly while you mix it into the sugar. Stop adding if you feel you have enough oil to make the sugar stick – you don’t want it to be soupy. You want the sugar to keep it’s texture. The oil is sort of acting like a glue to hold the granules together.
Hint: If you’re OK with dyes – you can add in a few drops of food coloring at the end to liven up the color. I added a few drops for this post just to add a little color – but I usually go without!
I like to leave my body scrub as my last act in the shower. I scrub it all in and rinse it off. In the warmer months, when I’m outside more often I like to use the scrub twice a week – at least. But in the winter months I stick to using it once a week.
If you self tan – or spray tan this stuff works great to remove the dead skin and allow for an even coat. I always use it if I need to spray tan for an event.
On another note: It feels AMAZING to be sitting at my computer writing this post after the MONTHS of moving from one state to another. I finally feel like my life is in order here – I’m only 80% unpacked, but I’m feeling a lot less stressed! So to those of you reading – I’M BACK! xo
